Compare blackout and room-darkening shades so you can choose the right light control for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms.
Blackout and room-darkening are related, but they are not always the same. Understanding the difference helps set realistic expectations before you choose a fabric.
Room-darkening fabrics significantly reduce incoming light, but they may not make the room completely dark. They are a good choice for bedrooms, TV rooms and spaces where you want comfort without total blackout.
Blackout fabrics are designed to block light through the material. They are often used in bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms. However, light can still enter around the edges if the treatment has side gaps.
For the darkest result, consider outside mount shades, side channels, layered curtains or products designed specifically for blackout performance. A blackout fabric inside a shallow frame may still show light at the sides.
